One day, out of the blue, I received a notice from my bank that the IRS had placed a levy on my account and would take everything I had in that account. I was shocked to receive notification from my bank of a return item of $100, along with a $22 service fee, showing a checking account balance of $790. I knew immediately that something had to be wrong. Without any notification from the IRS, they had levied my checking account. I have to admit how frightened I was with this whole situation. It began about 3 years ago when I moved to CA but was never was able to sell my house in another state due to the declining housing market. For two years, I carried both my old mortgage and my rental costs in CA. Ultimately, I had to cash out my IRA to pay the mounting debts and thus I accrued a large tax penalty.
